While I was out raking leaves this afternoon, it struck me that there may be a lot of new gun owners as a result of the post-election gun sales.
Folks, if you know people who are now new gun owners, impress upon them the need to ALWAYS follow the four rules. Even better… offer to take them to the range and help them get acquainted with their new firearm, and help them do it safely. Xavier has lots of good information for helping new shooters.
If you are a new firearm owner, let me help you out a bit.
1) The gun is always loaded
2) Never point the gun at anything you don’t wish to destroy.
3) Keep your damn finger off the trigger until your ready to shoot.
4) Know what beyond your target, and make sure there is a sufficient backstop to catch the bullet.
Get out and practice. If you don’t know where to go shoot, ask at your local gun shop. You can also search on this NRA website.
If you are buying a rifle for the first time, I would suggest attending at least one day of an Appleseed event to learn some basic safety and marksmanship skills. Check their website often as I’m sure dates will be added.
You’re local gun store may also be able to suggest some training as well.
As gun owners, we have a responsibility to help new gun owners come into the fold and to help them do it safely and responsibly.
Sadly, when one of us screws up, it reflects on all of us. Like it or not, we’re all ambassadors.
